MORAL DIVERSITY: EACH ARGUMENT IS MADE AS IMPERSONALLY AS POSSIBLE
For some reasons, says Maclntyre, each of these competing arguments makes considerable sense to us. First, each argument is based on a set of premises which, though fundamentally different from those in the other arguments, are equally compelling to a rational person. We cannot deny the force of an argument based on rights, nor one based on the principle of universalizability, nor one based on the value of human life, since all of these values are of vital importance to us. It is impossible for us to choose between such conceptually incommensurable values.
Second, each argument is made as impersonally as possible. We strive to be objective when we are debating the morality of abortion, for example. We try to screen out considerations that are related to our gender, race, ethnicity, religion, and social class. Yet no matter how much we struggle to be neutral, we fear that there may be no way to avoid the blinding lights of our own subjectivities. The more we realize how difficult it is to transcend our unique particularities, the more we begin to fear with Maclntyre that ultimately ethical arguments may be nothing but "a class of antagonistic wills, each will determined by some set of arbitrary choices of its own.
